Thesis Title: Analysing the performance of identity through sharing practices in Networked Spaces.
About
My PhD thesis analyses identity performance in spaces of converged social interactions, termed here as networked spaces. As communication technologies become ever more mobile there is increased convergence of online and offline spaces. Individuals are multimodal in interactions, adept at moving fluidly online and offline however limited studies have been conducted on these converged actions.
This project aims to address this imbalance and demonstrate that existing studies on identity performance are flawed for not fully representing the effect of converged social contexts. The use of such binary terms as online and offline are questioned and an argument for more advanced terminology put forth. The sites at which performances of identity converge are referred to here as networked spaces. I will argue that the term ‘networked space’ incorporates all sites both physical and digital in which interactions occur and highlights the convergence of online and offline contexts.
